Eagles Grounded By #58 South Alabama 6-1

BOX SCORE

MOBILE, ALABAMA- The Winthrop Men's tennis team took their talent to Alabama for this year's spring break trip.  First up for the Eagles were the #58 nationally ranked South Alabama Jaguars.  South Alabama had to earn every point of their 6-1 victory as the Eagles denied them for over 4 hours and 20 minutes.

The loss brings the Eagles to 3-8 on the season but they will be right back at it against Alabama-Huntsville tomorrow at 4 p.m.  The Eagles will then finish up their Alabama road trip when they face off against UAB on Monday, March 11th at 11 a.m.

The Eagles took to the courts with a new-look doubles lineup, however the doubles point ended up going to South Alabama in a tightly contested affair.  Sophomore Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) and freshman Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) were unable to dig out the win at the No. 2 spot as they fell 9-8 to South Alabama's Bernard and Gregor.  At the No. 3 slot, junior Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) and freshman Ivar Aramburu (Pueblo, Mexico) dropped to the Jag duo of Troglia and Hall 8-4.  The Eagles No. 1 duo of sophomore Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) and freshman Steven Patrick (Knoxville, Tennessee) were unable to finish their match due to the doubles point already being decided.

The Eagles took the Jaguars the distance several times in the singles competition, but were unable to close out the 3rd sets in each match.  Comerford clawed his way back into the match but South Alabama's Daniel Leitner halted his comeback by retaking control in a 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 victory.  Aramburu split sets at the No. 2 position, but fell 10-4 in the 3rd set tiebreaker to Alex Bernard.  Nagovnak wasn't able to crack the code at the No. 3 spot as he lost in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6, to Gerhard Gruwdelinga.  South Alabama's Juan Troglia overtook Hirokawa 6-3 in the 3rd at the No. 4 position.  Freshman Michael Chen (Johnson City, Tennessee) didn't have enough gas in the tank as Cody Hall outlasted him 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.  Boada secured the only point for the Eagles on the day with a straight sets 6-4, 6-3 victory over Blake Gregor.
