Softball Drops Two On Final Day Of Dixie State Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. George, Utah — Winthrop softball fell to Utah Valley and Dixie State on the final day of the Dixie State Tournament, Sunday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
vs. Utah Valley
  • Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the second as Gibbs hit a solo home run with 1 out
  • Utah Valley added a two more runs in the third inning, taking advantage of a fielding errors
  • Eagles had a chance to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the third as Macy McCall doubled with two outs, but Paige Rivas struck out to end the threat
  • In the fourth inning the Wolverines got something going with two outs and a runner on first
  • After Madison Carr drew a walk for runners at first and second Linnah Rebolledo singled through the right side for a 4-0 lead
  • Rebolledo stole second and then Kalena Shepherd walked to load the bases
  • Mikaela Thomson hit a grand slam on an 0-2 pitch for an 8-0 lead 

at Dixie State
  • Winthrop grabbed the lead in the top of the first as McCall led off with a single up the middle
  • McCall stole second and then after a groundout by Paige Rivas she stole third
  • Lauren King flied out to shallow right for the second out but McCall race home to score on a wild pitch
  • Eagles ran into trouble in the second as Dixie State pushed seven runs across
  • A bases clearing single to left highlighted the inning for Dixie State
  • Trailblazers added three more in the fourth

EXTRA BASES
  • King extended her streak of reaching base to 11 vs. Utah Valley but it came to an end against Dixie State
  • McCall has did reach base in both games and extended her streak to 11 straight
  • McCall also has a six-game hit streak while Paige Rivas has a four-game hit streak
  • On the weekend, Kaitlyn Tucker led the team in batting at .455 (5-for-11) as McCall and Rivas both had five hits as well
  • McCall has 72 stolen bases in her career (57 at Winthrop) and is closing in on 100 career runs with (96)
  • McCall also moved into 3rd on the Winthrop all-time stolen base list, now trailing the all-time leader by 14 (Charlene Smith, 71)

ON DECK
Winthrop is off during the week but back in action Friday morning against 9:30 a.m. against the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore in its opening game of the Marshall Round Robin in Huntington, W.Va.
