Academic Monitoring

Academic Monitoring
Winthrop University student-athletes follow the university academic advising procedures with their campus academic advisor.  In addition, the Athletic Academic Services staff assists student-athletes by monitoring student-athletes’ degree progress and eligibility status according to university, NCAA, and Big South Conference requirements. The staff also works with campus advisors to assist student-athletes with course selection and registration; however all student-athletes are ultimately responsible for following a course of academic study that will lead to a degree. When appropriate, the staff will refer student-athletes to various on-campus resources, including the Career Center, the Counseling Office, and other student services offices.

The Athletic Academic Services staff also monitors the academic progress of all Winthrop University student-athletes for NCAA continuing eligibility, as well as Winthrop University degree requirements. Mid-semester grade reports are sent to student-athletes’ professors in an effort to obtain information on class attendance, grades received, and class participation. The Athletic Academic Services staff discusses any unsatisfactory reports with the student-athlete in an effort to identify strategies to improve his or her academic standing. Following these mid-semester grade reports, the staff regularly communicates with faculty members throughout the remainder of the semester.

Winthrop
University student-athletes must have approval from the
Athletic Academic Services staff before dropping a class or changing their major. If approval is granted, student-athletes must submit changes in enrollment (adding/dropping courses, late enrollment, instructor drops, etc.) before the published deadlines set by Winthrop. This rule prevents student-athletes from making changes that could jeopardize their eligibility status.
